14-11-2012 - minutes reading time

dido11_cookiesOn Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, we organized in the #ODhouse in Utrecht the 11th Dialogue Thursday. It was the first of the series of 5 events in the 2012/2013 season. With a new program format: still inspiration and insights, but now also working together on a case.

The theme was the telecom legislation and the implications for cookies. We mainly wanted to work out how to deal with this on your website. From the MOA (Wim van Slooten) an update on the legal status, but don't get stuck in criticism: just work on implementation. Aegon was prepared to present a case (by Lilian Meuwsen) and with all 50 attendees we then worked in 5 groups to come up with solutions to the Aegon case.

Cookie opt-in tips

What we learned above all is that we have to start seeing the cookie as an additional product that we must now also try to sell to our visitors. In addition, we especially need to show that clicking that opt-in is not scary at all. In addition to the ‘Yes’ button, why not offer a variant with “Yes, for 7 days” (the ’trial’).

We have summarized all the tips that emerged from the final presentations in a handy PDF, which you can download here.

Slides: numbers, law and persuasion

A total of 3 presentations were given during Dialogue Thursday:

  • Ton Wesseling: The first cookie implementation statistics with the differences between a bar or a layover. (PDF handout)
  • Wim van Slooten (MOA): the origins of the legislation and next steps. (PDF handout)
  • Bart Schutz: What persuasion techniques are ideal for enticing visitors to opt-in (PDF handout)

The slides can be found below (or at our slideshare account):

Oh yeah.

In the near future, if everyone is really going to properly entice visitors to click “yes,” or even frustrate them by continuing to ask “no” clickers over and over again for the opt-in... won't the opt-in then become the same as the terms and conditions acceptance checkbox when ordering in an ecommerce shop? Which virtually everyone ticks without reading....

As a result, in a few months all of the Netherlands will have opted in for everything.... That can never have been the intent of the law can it? #tobecontinued
